Jacob Simons is a songwriter with a gift for fearlessness. He is not afraid to make himself vulnerable as he reaches into his soul and puts to the page whatever he might find there: beauty, ugliness, truth, untruth. Whether drawing on folk, blues, or lo-fi indie rock, his understated guitar work and plainspoken candor strip the music down to its core and leave nothing hidden.
Jacob recently moved to Boulder from Kalamazoo, where he led the slowcore Americana band Moon Orchids. Prior to this, he spent several years performing in various post-punk and noise rock outfits around southwest Michigan. For those who feel deeply and who seek connection through sound, Jacob’s music can truly resonate and leave a lasting mark.
Honey Blazer drapes their Cosmic American curl in a soft slice of the ‘70s. A gauzy synth padding adds a stage light glow. The band mixes the current crop of gas crisis cruisers — Foxygen, Michael Rault, Ornament, Lemon Twigs — with a touch of the Canyon creepers. Their new single, “Carol Kang” hangs on the breezes with a silken glow, a perfect pairing to the warmer days ahead.
"New Country Sounds finds Wong’s boyish lilt exploring deep registers and deeper themes, coupled with unmistakably capital-C Country explorations on both guitar and steel. Wong the writer, however, continues to find himself owing more to Ray Davies than he does to Ray Price. Wong’s natural charm and humor set him apart from today’s crop of selfserious crooners. A laconic slacker sensibility persists throughout, lending Wong’s more winkingly macho moments an ironic distance that comes off cheeky rather than threatening." -Nick Stockton
