Gyokuro Gokou
Gyokuro Gokou
This single-field (non-blended) Gyokuro was shaded by net for 25 days in order to enrich its flavor. The net (kabuse) restricts the amount of sunlight allowed to the bushes and forces them to produce much more chlorophyll than they otherwise would. This results in a deeper, greener color than sencha, as well as a richer and more umami-forward flavor. It was grown in Uji Tawara, one of the main historical tea growing regions for this type of tea, by a single family who carefully shaded the tea bushes each day.
Originating in the 1950’s in Uji, Japan, the Gokou tea varietal is used primarily for Gyokuro and Match. This single-field lot was also hand-picked, unlike the majority of Gyokuro teas on the market, and is harvested only once in the Spring. As a result, we find that it is especially pungent and sweet, with a high concentration of L-theanine in the brewed tea.
