Gyokuro Karigane
Gyokuro Karigane
Karigane refers to Japanese green tea which is a blend of leaves and stems, while Gyokuro means that the tea bushes have been shaded for a number of days in order to increase the chlorophyll content in the leaves. The addition of stems tends to make a tea slightly fuller and sweeter than otherwise, while also diluting the caffeine content of the cup (the most caffeine in the tea plant is in the buds, then the lower leaves, and the stems have the least).
Our Gyokuro Karigane is thus a somewhat unique drinking experience. It has the rich umami and sea vegetable notes one expects from a high quality Gyokuro, but with a subtle and persistent vanillic/floral sweetness. We recommend this one for fans of Japanese greens looking for something a little different, and especially for caffeine-sensitive tea drinkers (or tea drinkers looking for a satisfying night cap). Steep at a lower temperature for best results.
