Matcha is the the most important style of tea in traditional Japanese tea culture. It exists in a powdered form, which is how all tea was consumed prior to the invention of loose-leaf tea during the Song Dynasty in China. Being an isolated island nation, the Japanese did not adopt loose tea until centuries after China, during which time the consumption of matcha green tea became heavily ceremonialized.
