Dong Fang Hong
Dong Fang Hong
The Dong Fang Hong oolong (东方红) or “The East is Red” was named by none other than Chairman Mao. The cultivar itself is descended from one of the original Song Zhong mother trees, making it one of the very oldest varietals in the Phoenix mountains. Like all other Dan Cong oolongs, it must be harvested from physically proximate and genetically identical trees and bushes, in order to protect the integrity of its unique flavors and aromas, hence “single bush”. Its taste is delicate and floral, with sugary and peachy notes and light but stimulating tannins. Like many other oolongs of this type, the taste is highly fruity and floral yet unique. We taste peach juice, orchids, and tulsi.
All of our Dan Cong oolongs from 2020 onwards are given 3-4 roasts, more than most other teas of this type on the market. In addition to giving the teas more texture and sweetness, we find that this also helps preserve the shelf life of the teas and increased their potential to age, though they must be rested for at least a year in order to let the roast mellow before consuming.
